Failure Vs Success
If I, the so-called lama, can provide my so-called students with all the necessary conditions and opportunities to study and practise the dharma, and they become learned and well-practised, I would be considered a success. I will have fulfilled my role. Should I fail to make that happen, it wouldn't matter how hard I worked, how famous I became, or how many temples I built – without having produced students capable of continuing the lineage, I would be a failure.
The same applies to you who are students at the moment. If you can assimilate and come to embody the teachings and then pass them on to others, just as you received them, you will have been a success. Failing to do this, you could not be considered a success, regardless of how good things look from the outside.
