Our Thoughts Will Mould Us

The way we think is all important. Whichever way we usually think is the same manner of thinking that will be triggered when we encounter events, circumstances, etc. If our way of thinking is negative then what we encounter will feed that, whereas if we think positively all we encounter will further that way of thinking and be a cause for things to go well for us.

If we take someone who has renunciation, for example, the more they look into the state of cyclic existence the more afraid they become. They’ll think ‘Samsara really is awful. It is truly suffering and full of problems. I must free myself from it as quickly as possible.’ A bodhisattva on the other hand, on seeing more and more of the suffering in cyclic existence will not try to escape out of fear, but will think, ‘Poor sentient beings. What can I do to help them.’ It will only bolster their compassion.

So for one type it becomes a support for their renunciation and for another it becomes a support for their compassion. The objective world triggers different things depending on people’s ways of thinking and understanding.

Someone with the view will think how strange it is that unreal appearances are, through delusion, taken to be real. They will become more and more certain about how delusion manifests. They will think ‘Delusion is truly delusion. The unreal is truly unreal.’ And seeing this, what they experience only furthers their understanding of the view.

So what is experienced aids these different individuals in different ways based on their different ways of thinking.

Someone with a poor way of thinking will not see the flaws of cyclic existence, and will instead see good in attaining status and money. They will be attracted to this and that, and fall under their influence and be drawn further in to cyclic existence. For someone with a positive way of thinking, the things of cyclic existence will be taken in such a way that they lead to liberation; whereas for one with a poorer way of thinking, the things of cyclic existence lead them to prolong the cycle.

In short, the things experienced are not actually things which truly pull us up or drag us down. Whether we go up or down depends on how we think.
