A Letter to a Dear Student

Dear Venerable Gelong Gendun,

Your sudden passing to the next world fills me with mixed feelings of sorrow and joy.

When someone passes away having taken 20 or so years of dedicated practice to conclusion, how could that not be a cause of joy.

But on the other hand, over the course of more than a decade I have simulated the act of giving you many thousands of hours of teachings and you simulated the act of listening to those supposed teachings and the bond of faith and sacred pledge (samaya) between us is pure, so now that you have suddenly passed away, how could I not be saddened.

Alas, who could change the nature of composite entities.

Ok, Gendun la, farewell my friend. I pray that your path to liberation is smooth and that we meet again in future lives.
