The One Indispensable Thing

There is one thing that every Buddhist must have but has become so rare to find. What is it, you ask: the drive to attain liberation.

Without the ambition to strive for liberation, we may study, practise, meditate, etc., but the scope of our thoughts and aims will not transcend the mundane world or this life. We may enrol in a study program or participate in a long retreat, but once it is finished, like graduating from school, we will drop our studies and practice there.

Many study and practise to become teachers, khenpos, lamas, etc., but such positions or roles should not be our objective. Liberation or omniscience should be what we strive for.

In this way, we should aspire to follow in the footsteps of true Kagyupas and equalise the duration of our life and our practise. In other words, to practise consistently and diligently for as long as we live.
