A New Perspective
If your idea of practicing the Dharma is simply to adopt new tasks or activities—thinking, “Now I’m going to recite this mantra or meditate on that deity”—while your fundamental way of perceiving life remains unchanged, holding on to your likes and dislikes, you can be certain that it will be impossible to become a true Dharma practitioner.
To become a Dharma practitioner means that the way we perceive what we see, hear, and think undergoes a genuine transformation. From the very first teachings on impermanence to the final pith instructions on Mahamudra, all Dharma teachings lead to the same point: to perceive things in a way that is closer to how they really are, rather than adding something new.
